Are You A Candidate?

LASIK eye surgery candidacy

LASIK CandidateCompleting a LASIK eye surgery pre-operative exam is the only way to determine whether or not LASIK may be a good vision correction procedure for you. We encourage you to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Earl Lanter so he can adequately review your vision condition and make an educated suggestion for vision correction. If LASIK eye surgery is not an option then Dr. Lanter will be able to suggest alternative vision correction procedures if they make sense. Take our LASIK self-evaluation test to start the process.

Good LASIK Candidates

  • Do not have vision related eye diseases that would prevent LASIK surgery from being possible.
  • Have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription for multiple years.
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Are affected by one of the common types of vision problems or refractive error – myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism (blurred vision caused by an irregular shaped cornea), hyperopia (farsightedness), or a combination thereof (e.g., myopia with astigmatism. (i.e eye surgery education council – ASCRS 2006)
  • Possess a healthy cornea with the adequate amount of corneal thickness to perform the LASIK surgery. Our state of the art diagnostic equipment located right on our facility will measure your corneal thickness.

Your decision to have LASIK laser vision correction depends on the results of a very thorough preoperative evaluation. On the day of your preoperative exam, we will complete multiple tests and points of evaluation including:

  • Corneal thickness testing
  • Pupil size measurement
  • Dry eye evaluation
  • Tests to analyze the shape of your cornea
  • Measure the level of nearsightedness, farsightedness of astigmatism
  • Wavefront measurements
  • Complete dilated eye exam and review retina

The Importance of Realistic Expectations with LASIK eye surgery

The vast majority of patients who have had LASIK eye surgery are completely satisfied with their eye surgery. The benefits will drastically outweigh any small issues. You must remember, however, as with any medical or surgical procedure the outcomes may differ.

LASIK cannot provide perfect vision every time for every patient. However, for the majority of LASIK candidates, the surgery improves vision and reduces the need for corrective eyewear. In fact, the vast majority of patients with low to moderate nearsightedness achieve 20/40 vision or better, and many can expect to achieve 20/20 vision or better.
